JUMBO in the cockpit with TOSHIBA TEC Mobile Shopping Experience

Schijndel, THE NETHERLANDS, November 2009 – TOSHIBA TEC Europe joined forces with Capgemini and JUMBO Supermarkets to deliver a new shopping experience for shoppers at Dutch retailer JUMBO in an innovative Mobile Shopping Experience trial.

The storeMate Mobile Shopping Experience (MSE), which is being marketed by TOSHIBA TEC through its European network of sales offices, connects Toshiba’s storeMate retail application suite with a handheld data capture device to allow shoppers to scan and bag while they shop. storeMate back-office is integrated into the retailer’s ERP system to allow retailers to efficiently use the captured data in various new ways to increase revenue. The MSE solution allows for connectivity with every other third-party hardware EPOS system.

Improve your service offering for your customers upon entrance rather than at the checkout is part of JUMBO’s main objectives. A first milestone was reached after two weeks of operation as 40 percent of all shoppers were using the MSE system, allowing for 60 percent of the total turnover to be generated through the MSE solution!

The storeMate roadmap includes integration of a ‘merchandise server’ to allow consumers to obtain on-the-spot information delivery, personalized promotional offers and cross as well as upselling possibilities.

In a yet a further step, storeMate will allow users to receive information of products available in the store that are related to items just bought to make “smart buy” combinations, helping retailers to lift revenues by cross and upselling.

"By combining technologies, TOSHIBA TEC will provide JUMBO consumers with a complete shopping experience that links thousands of ticketed food items directly to mobile information,” says Gerard Pruijn, Sales Director, TOSHIBA TEC The Netherlands. “This new solution will enable brand owners and retailers to stand apart in an increasingly competitive environment and more effectively cross-sell complimentary products and services."

“Our new mobile-merchandising solution will eventually deliver purchasing suggestions, special offers and virtually any type of promotional messaging to shoppers as they are in the process of making buying decisions in the store.”

Colette Cloosterman, Commercial Director, JUMBO: “The information appears on the screen of a consumer’s mobile shopping device, turning the handheld into a kind of personal sales assistant that provides bottom line benefits to JUMBO. These benefits include increased revenue, improved traffic and conversion, and promotion of consumer loyalty.”

The TOSHIBA TEC storeMate retail software suite is being developed by TOSHIBA TEC Europe’s Center of Competence at Amersfoort, The Netherlands.
